The days of carrying around a stack of printed guidebooks and folded maps are gone. Technology can be a traveler’s best friend. By adding a few apps on your phone, all the information you need is right at your fingertips. We suggest these six types of travel apps to get you started.

Health Verification

If you haven’t traveled since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, health verification might be new to you. Many airlines are using apps, such as VeriFLY, to collect test results, vaccination status, or other health declarations before passengers arrive at the airport. This streamlines the check-in process, and may even help you skip a line or two.

Airline App

Once you’ve booked your tickets, use the airline’s app to stay on top of your flight information—itinerary changes, delays, seat assignments, baggage tracking, and more. Some airlines even use their app to deliver inflight entertainment options right to your device.

Maps

Whether you’re in a vehicle or on foot, a map application will help you navigate an unfamiliar city. It can double as a travel guidebook, sharing useful details like attraction hours, ticket information, and restaurant reviews. Google Maps is one of the most popular choices, especially in more populated areas, but some destinations offer more detailed routes using Maps.me or other apps.

Tip: Many apps offer an offline version allowing you to download maps in advance, so you can access them during times you don’t have a cellular data connection.

Ridesharing and Taxi Service

Ridesharing services are more popular than ever, although availability varies greatly from city to city. If you plan to use Uber, Lyft, or a taxi-on-call service, make sure your account has been updated with current contact and payment information.

Public Transportation

Planning to catch a bus or ride the subway? Many large public transportation systems offer an app with information about stations, route planning, timetables, and fares. In some cities, this might be integrated into Google Maps.

Communication

Communication can be a challenge while visiting another country. Your phone might include the ability to text or call over WiFi, or you may need to download a separate app. WhatsApp is the world’s most widely-used messaging service, and is hugely popular in Latin America and Asia.

Tip: Activation of these of services or apps usually requires a connection to your cell phone carrier in the United States, so be sure to take care of it before your departure.
